Bereavement Project

To develop our whole school Pastoral Support ability to help our pupils deal with the unavoidable losses, which are part of daily life for us all, Childwall Abbey School took part in a Bereavement Project facilitated by School Improvement Liverpool.

Most grieving pupils do not need a “bereavement expert” but simply need the support of people who care. Teachers and all school staff can make a real difference to pupils experiencing loss (e.g. the loss of a loved one, the separation of parents, death of a pet, unexpected change of personal circumstances). Offering opportunities for pupils to talk about their experiences if they want to and by listening and responding to the spoken and unspoken messages they send can make a real difference.

Michelle Mollard (Learning Mentor and member of our Pastoral Team) co-ordinated our school project. A group of pupils also took part, working together through the support programme and presenting their experiences at an amazing and joyful celebration event attended by their families. We were all so proud of them!

Parents and carers are, as always, key to the success of work of this sensitive nature and we strongly encourage any parent who feels their child may benefit, to contact Michelle or another member of our Pastoral Team for advice.
